Short track skating debuted as an
Olympic event at the 1992 games.
In short track competition, speed
skaters race in packs of 4 to 6 over
a 110 meter oval laid on the
surface of a hockey rink. The
game was invented in the late 19th
century when indoor rinks were
first introduced, and is
characterized by quick turns and
many crashes.
There are four events, men's and
women's singles and relays. Cathy
Turner of the U.S., a parttime
singer and songwriter, has
captured Gold in both the 1992 and
1994 Olympics in women's singles,
as well as a silver and a bronze in
the relay events. Korean Kim
Ki-Hoon has taken Gold in both the
men's events.
